Location: Sited in the Southern Key Economic Region, Ho Chi Minh City is a dynamic, developing city and a major economic center of Viet Nam. District 1 is the administrative center.

Area: 2,095 km2

Education & Training: Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is a gathering place for many famous domestic and foreign universities. Public universities such as HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Medicine Pham Ngoc Thach, University of Polytechnology, University of Natural Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Pedagogy, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Technical Pedagogy. International universities such as RMIT University (Australia), FulBright University (USA).

 

Infrastructure: HCMC is an important trade gateway in the region and the world with a large system of seaports and international airports.

Road: The road network plays an important role with highways passing through HCMC connecting with other localities including: Ben Luc – Long Thanh expressway (57.8 km), HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway (55.7 km), Trung Luong (HCMC) – My Thuan – Can Tho expressway (92 km), HCMC – Moc Bai expressway (53.5 km, heading to Phnom Penh, expected to start construction in 2023).

 

Port: The port cluster in HCMC includes 2 main ports: Hiep Phuoc port and Cat Lai port (30,000 – 60,000 DWT), the biggest capacity in the country, reaching 200 million tons/year, capable of receiving large-scale passenger and cargo ships.

 

Airport: Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the largest and the busiest airport in Vietnam, located 6 km north of the District 1 of HCMC. It has a total capacity of 40 million passengers/year (adjusted plan up to 50 million passengers/year). Within 5 ~ 8 hours flight can reach 50% global markets.

 

Railway: Saigon Railway Station is the last point of the North – South train line. A number of inner-city railway lines (08 metro lines) have been building. Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien Metro No. 1 is expected to complete by the end of 2021.

Waterway: Waterway transport accounts for a very small proportion, about 4 ~ 6% of the whole city’s transport demand, although HCMC owns 92 local inland waterways routes with more than 598.7 km long and 5 national inland waterways routes with more than 100 km long.

Industrial parks: Total of 18 IPs and EPZs (4,467.15 ha). Currently 12 IPs have been fully occupied, the rest industrial land available for lease is 330.95 ha. In addition, 197 ha of Saigon Hi-Tech Park (1,110.2 ha) is available for lease. The Agricultural Hi-Tech Park (88.17 ha) has been completely filled. One area of 23.8 ha in Cu Chi district for mushroom and post-harvest technology and one area of 89 ha in Can Gio district for aquatic products are expected to be additional expansions.

Infrastructure rent (reference): 100 ~ 200 USD/m2/term.

FDI: As of August 2020, there are 9,763 valid FDI projects (USD 47.84 billion). HCMC is the largest FDI hosting locality nationwide.

Typical FDI Investors: Most of the major corporations in the world have invested in HCMC: R&D centers of Samsung, GS, Kumho, Lotte, Emart, CJ (Korea); First Solar, Intel (USA); Nidec Sankyo, Sojitz, Aeon, Family Mart (Japan); Mega Mart, Central Group, C.P, Siam (Thailand); Mercedes, Bosch (Germany).

 

Attractive investment sectors: Ho Chi Minh City encourages foreign investment in the following areas: (1) 09 major service sectors including finance, banking, insurance; Trade; Tourism; Transportation services, ports and warehouses; Post, telecommunications, information technology and communications; Real estate business, consulting services; science and technology; Health; Education and training. (2) High-tech industry; Mechanical engineering, electronics – informatics, automobile assembly and manufacturing; Supporting industries for the development of these businesses, food processing and pharmaceutical chemistry industry. (3) Agriculture: Production and development of cultivars, breeds, forest seedling, aquatic breeds; Biotechnology applications; Producing feed for cattle, poultry and aquatic animals; Manufacture of machines for agriculture, forestry, fishery, salt production, food processing machinery and irrigation equipment; development and incubation of high technology; Technical services for planting industrial and forestry trees; Protection services for plants and animals; Scientific and technical consultancy services on cultivation, animal husbandry, aquaculture, veterinary, and plant protection.

 

Comparative advantages:

The education system in HCMC is extremely developed, great ability to communicate in many different languages ​​(English, French, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, German), a lot of foreign experts and investors (more than 100,000 people) have chosen HCMC to live while working in HCMC or neighboring provinces (Binh Duong, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Dong Nai, Long An, Tay Ninh). According to a survey of Expat Insider 2019 on InterNations, HCMC ranked 3rd among the best cities for expats, after Taipei and Kuala Lumpur.

– Service: Total revenue of service sector reaches USD 49.39 billion, of which retail sales of goods achieves USD 32.37 billion. E-commerce has flourished in recent years with numerous large corporations such as Lazada, Tiki, Sendo, Shopee having offices or branches in HCMC.

 

– Tourism: Ho Chi Minh City has many famous tourist attractions such as Independence Palace, Saigon Opera House, War Remnants Museum, Cu Chi Tunnels. At Bach Dang wharf, visitors can take Express boat towards Can Gio beach, Vung Tau city, Con Dao island. Can Gio is the only coastal district of HCMC, with a coastline of 23km, more than 20,000 ha of river – canal surface water, 330,000 ha of mangrove forests, with Rung Sac military base historical relic (Sac forest), which are very suitable for developing ecotourism and sea tourism. In 2019, HCMC welcomed 8.6 million international tourist arrivals and 32.77 million domestic tourist arrivals, the total revenue (travel, hotels and restaurants) touched around USD 5.96 billion.
